A day for the kazoo, the small humming instrument that turns your own voice into a buzzy tune anyone can play.

National Kazoo Day falls on Thursday, January 28, 2027. That is 93 days away.
The kazoo is a small tube with a thin membrane stretched over a hole near the top. You do not blow into it. You hum or sing into the wide end, and the membrane vibrates, giving your voice that bright, buzzing sound.
That detail surprises a lot of people the first time they try one. Blowing gets you almost nothing. Humming gets you a tune right away, which is why kazoos turn up in classrooms, at birthday parties and in the hands of people who insist they cannot play an instrument.
Most kazoos are plastic or metal and fit in a pocket. Because the sound comes from your own voice, the kazoo plays whatever you can hum, in whatever key you happen to be in. Some musicians use it on purpose, adding a buzzy line to folk, jug band and novelty songs.
Marking the day usually means making some noise. People hum along to a favorite song, gather a few friends for an impromptu kazoo band, or hand one to a child and wait. A kazoo chorus of even four people sounds louder than seems reasonable, and it rarely stays in tune for long.
If you do not have one, a comb wrapped in a piece of wax paper works on the same idea. Hum against the paper and it buzzes in much the same way.
