A little reason to celebrate

National Dandelion Day

Nature ยท April 5

A look at the dandelion, the bright yellow flower that turns into a round puff of seeds, and simple ways to appreciate it.

National Dandelion Day

National Dandelion Day falls on Monday, April 5, 2027. That is 160 days away.

The dandelion is the yellow flower that shows up in lawns, sidewalk cracks and roadside verges without being invited. Each bloom is actually a cluster of many tiny flowers packed together, and the plant sits on a flat rosette of jagged leaves.

The name comes from the French for lion's tooth, a nod to those toothed leaves. Once the yellow head finishes, it closes up and reopens as the familiar white globe of seeds. Each seed hangs from a small parachute, and a breeze or a breath can carry it a long way. Children have been making wishes on them for a very long time, and most adults still cannot pass one without being tempted.

Dandelions are tougher than they look. A long taproot lets them come back after mowing, which explains a lot about the average lawn. Their flowers open in sunlight and often close in the evening or on dull days, so the same patch can look different by afternoon.

Early in the season, dandelions are among the flowers bees and other insects visit for food. Some gardeners leave a few in place for that reason. If you pick any, choose spots you know have not been sprayed, and leave plenty behind.

A good way to notice them is simply to look down on a walk and count how many stages you can find at once: tight green buds, open yellow heads, closed heads and full seed clocks, sometimes all on one plant.
