A little reason to celebrate

Read a Road Map Day

Hobby ยท April 5

Read a Road Map Day invites you to unfold a paper map, trace a route by hand and see how roads, towns and rivers fit together.

Read a Road Map Day

Read a Road Map Day falls on Monday, April 5, 2027. That is 160 days away.

A paper road map shows a whole region at once. Highways run in thick red or blue lines, back roads thin out into gray, and small towns sit as dots with their names printed beside them. Reading one means finding where you are, choosing where to go and working out the roads between.

The experience is different from following a voice on a phone. You see the lake you will pass, the county line, the town just off the route that you never knew existed. A legend in the corner explains the symbols, and a grid of letters and numbers along the edges helps you find a place listed in the index. Distances often appear as small numbers between points on the road.

People mark the day by pulling an old atlas off the shelf, planning a drive they may or may not take, or simply tracing a familiar commute to see it from above. Kids tend to like hunting for odd town names. Some people keep maps from past trips and mark the routes they drove in pen.

Then there is the folding. A road map opens easily and closes on its own terms, usually along creases it chose itself. Getting it back into its original shape is a skill some people master and others quietly give up on, tucking the map into the glove box half folded.
