National Day of Prayer falls on Thursday, May 6, 2027. That is 191 days away.
Each year on the first Thursday in May, Americans who pray are invited to do so with the nation in mind. It is a national observance, and it asks for no single form of prayer.
How people mark it varies a great deal. Some gather on courthouse steps, in town squares or at city halls for a short public service. Others meet in churches, synagogues, mosques, temples and community centers, sometimes with several congregations sharing one room. Many keep it private, with a quiet moment at home, at work or before a meal.
The prayers themselves tend to follow familiar themes. People pray for leaders, for neighbors, for those serving in the military, for families and for people who are struggling. Some services include readings, music or a moment of silence, and some invite anyone present to offer a few words.
For people who do not pray, the day often passes with little notice, and that is part of how it works. Participation is personal and voluntary. A local gathering is usually short, held outdoors in daylight, and open to anyone who wants to stand at the edge and listen.
In many towns the morning event is announced on a library bulletin board or a church sign a week or two ahead, often with a time as early as seven.
