A little reason to celebrate

National Nurses Day

Commemorative ยท May 6

National Nurses Day recognizes the nurses who care for patients in hospitals, clinics, schools and homes across the United States.

National Nurses Day

National Nurses Day falls on Thursday, May 6, 2027. That is 191 days away.

Nurses are the people most patients see most often. A doctor may stop by for a few minutes, but a nurse is usually the one checking vital signs at two in the morning, explaining a new medication, and noticing when something seems off.

The work covers a lot of ground. Nurses give medications, dress wounds, monitor patients, and teach families how to manage care at home. They work in emergency rooms and intensive care units, but also in schools, nursing homes, public health offices and private homes. Some specialize in caring for newborns, others in surgery or in helping people near the end of life.

Much of the job is invisible from the outside. Charting, coordinating with other staff, and keeping track of small changes in a patient's condition take up long stretches of a shift. Many nurses work twelve-hour shifts, nights, weekends and holidays, because people need care around the clock.

The day is mostly marked in simple ways. Hospitals and clinics often hold small recognitions for their staff, and patients and families send cards or notes. A specific thank you tends to land better than a general one. Remembering the nurse who stayed calm during a hard night, or who learned a child's favorite stuffed animal by name, means more than a box of anything.

If a nurse once helped you or someone you love, they probably remember fewer details than you do. They saw a lot of patients that week.
