A little reason to celebrate

National Dunce Day

Fun ยท November 8

A look at the word dunce, its surprising roots in a respected medieval scholar, and the mistakes that end up teaching us something.

National Dunce Day

National Dunce Day falls on Sunday, November 8, 2026. That is 12 days away.

The word dunce has an odd history. It comes from John Duns Scotus, a Scottish scholar and Franciscan friar whose writing on philosophy and theology was studied for generations. His followers were called Scotists, and sometimes Dunsmen or simply Duns.

Later scholars who favored newer ideas turned that name against his followers. Calling someone a Duns came to mean they were stubborn and slow to learn, and the spelling drifted into dunce. So a word for a foolish person began as a nickname tied to one of the sharpest thinkers of his time. Words can travel a long way from where they started.

The dunce cap belongs to a harsher part of the story. Schools once made children wear a tall cone of paper as a punishment, meant to shame them in front of the class. Most people now see it as a cruel way to treat a struggling student, and it has largely disappeared from classrooms.

That leaves a better use for the day. Most people who know anything learned it partly by getting it wrong first. A cook who burned the rice learns to turn the heat down. A new driver who misjudged a parking space learns where the corners of the car are. Talking about those moments, without embarrassment, tends to make them useful.

It also helps to remember that a slow learner is still a learner. Plenty of people found their footing late, after a teacher or friend gave them patience instead of a paper hat.
