National STEAM Day celebrates science, technology, engineering, art and math, and the hands-on curiosity that connects them.

National STEAM Day falls on Sunday, November 8, 2026. That is 12 days away.
STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art and math. The day also goes by National STEM Day, the version without the art, and some people simply write it as STEM/STEAM to cover both.
The idea behind adding the A is that these subjects tend to borrow from one another. A bridge needs math, but someone also decided how it should look. A good diagram is part drawing and part data. Music has patterns you can count, and a well-made app is as much about design as code.
Most people mark the day by making or testing something. Classrooms and libraries often set up building challenges with paper, tape and string. At home, a kitchen can become a small lab: baking soda and vinegar fizz because an acid meets a base and releases carbon dioxide. Kids sketch inventions, take apart an old gadget to see what is inside, or try to build the tallest tower out of uncooked spaghetti and marshmallows. The spaghetti usually loses.
None of it requires special equipment. A ruler, a flashlight, a notebook and a question go a long way. Asking why something works, then trying it a second way, is most of the method.
A paper airplane is a decent place to start. Fold one, throw it, then change a single crease and throw it again. The difference in how it flies is engineering, physics and a little bit of art, all in one sheet of paper.
