A little reason to celebrate

National French Bulldog Day

Animal · January 13

A day for French bulldogs, the small, flat-faced dogs with bat-like ears and a big, goofy personality.

National French Bulldog Day falls on Wednesday, January 13, 2027. That is 78 days away.

The French bulldog is a small, solid dog with a flat face and big upright ears that stand up like the wings of a bat. Most weigh somewhere around 20 to 28 pounds, which is enough to fill a lap and not enough to take over a couch. Frenchies are known for being playful, affectionate, and a little bit clownish.

The breed took its present shape in the 1800s. Small bulldogs were popular with lace workers in England, and many of those workers moved to France and took their dogs along. In France the dogs were bred with local types, and the upright ears became the breed's signature. The breed then spread across Europe and to the United States, where it has ranked among the most popular dogs in recent years.

That flat face needs care. French bulldogs can have trouble breathing and they overheat quickly, so owners keep walks short and cool and watch for heavy panting. Most do not swim well. The skin folds on the face need regular cleaning and drying, and many Frenchies are happiest indoors with their people.

People mark the day by enjoying the dogs they have. Owners post photos, buy a new toy, or take a slow walk in the morning. Others read about the breed or look into French bulldog rescue groups, which place dogs that have lost their homes.

A Frenchie does not bark much, but it makes up for it with snorts, grunts, and a surprising range of sighs.
