A little reason to celebrate

National Rubber Ducky Day

Fun ยท January 13

A look at the rubber duck, the small yellow bath toy that floats, squeaks and keeps company with kids, collectors and puzzled programmers alike.

National Rubber Ducky Day

National Rubber Ducky Day falls on Wednesday, January 13, 2027. That is 78 days away.

A rubber duck is a small, usually yellow toy shaped like a duckling, made to float in the bath. Most today are made of vinyl or other plastics rather than actual rubber, but the old name stuck, and nobody seems eager to change it.

The classic design is simple: a round body, a flat bottom, an orange beak and painted eyes. Many have a small hole underneath, which lets them squeak when squeezed. That same hole also lets water in, so a duck that lives in the tub benefits from a squeeze to empty it and time to dry out between baths.

The toy has wandered far from the bathroom. Collectors line shelves with ducks dressed as pirates, chefs, astronauts and famous characters. Some towns hold charity duck races, where numbered ducks drift down a river toward a finish line. Software developers talk about "rubber duck debugging," which means explaining a stubborn problem out loud, line by line, to a duck on the desk. The duck says nothing, and the act of explaining often reveals the bug anyway.

Marking the day tends to be low key. Some people set a duck on a desk or dashboard, some give one to a friend, and some simply let a child pick a new one for bath time. Hiding small ducks for others to find has become a cheerful game in some places, as long as they go in spots where they bother no one.

A plain yellow duck still costs very little, and it still floats upright.
