A little reason to celebrate

National Golf Lovers Day

Hobby · October 4

A day for people who love golf, from early tee times and putting greens to backyard chipping and the quiet walk between holes.

National Golf Lovers Day falls on Monday, October 4, 2027. That is 342 days away.

Golf is a game of getting a small ball into a small hole using as few strokes as possible, across a course of grass, sand and the occasional pond. This day is for the people who find that idea endlessly absorbing.

A round usually runs eighteen holes, though nine is common when time is short. Each hole starts at a tee and ends on a green, where the grass is cut very short so the ball rolls true. In between sits the fairway, the rough, and whatever hazards the course designer felt like adding.

Much of the appeal is the pace. Golf leaves long stretches of walking and waiting, which makes it a sociable game as much as a competitive one. Friends talk between shots, and a single good swing can make up for several bad ones, at least emotionally.

You do not need a full round to take part. Driving ranges let people hit a bucket of balls in an hour, and putting greens are often free to use at public courses. Miniature golf counts in spirit, with its windmills and loops and its own fierce rivalries.

For longtime players, the day might mean an early tee time while the dew is still on the grass. For everyone else, it might mean finally learning how to hold a club, which is mostly about keeping the hands together and the grip relaxed.

Ways to celebrate

• Play a round of miniature golf with friends or family.
• Practice putting on a public course's practice green.
• Watch a golf broadcast and learn a few scoring terms.
• Ask a golfer you know about their favorite course.
