A day for vodka, the clear spirit distilled from grains or potatoes, and the many simple ways people sip it or mix it into drinks.

National Vodka Day falls on Monday, October 4, 2027. That is 342 days away.
Vodka is a clear distilled spirit, usually made from grains such as wheat or rye, and sometimes from potatoes. It is filtered and diluted with water until it reaches a clean, fairly neutral taste.
That neutrality is the whole point. Vodka rarely announces itself in a glass, which is why it turns up in so many mixed drinks. It carries citrus, tomato, cranberry or ginger without arguing with any of them. A screwdriver is little more than vodka and orange juice, and a Moscow mule pairs it with ginger beer and lime.
Neutral does not mean identical, though. Spirits made from different bases can feel slightly different on the tongue. Rye versions often taste a little peppery, and potato versions can seem rounder and softer. Tasting two side by side, chilled and in small amounts, is an easy way to find out whether you notice.
In parts of Eastern Europe, vodka is traditionally served very cold and taken alongside food, such as pickles, dark bread or smoked fish. That habit of pairing a small pour with something salty works just as well at an American kitchen table.
Vodka also has uses outside the glass. Cooks add a splash to tomato cream sauces, and some bakers use a little in pie dough, where it helps keep the crust tender because it adds liquid without building as much gluten as water does.
