A day for hot air balloons: how they rise on heated air, what a flight feels like, and simple ways to enjoy watching them drift overhead.

Hot Air Balloon Day falls on Saturday, June 5, 2027. That is 221 days away.
A hot air balloon is about the simplest flying machine there is. A large fabric envelope fills with air warmed by a propane burner, and because warm air is lighter than the cooler air around it, the whole thing lifts, basket and passengers included.
There is no steering wheel. A pilot climbs or sinks by firing the burner or letting the air cool, and changes direction by finding winds that blow different ways at different heights. Where the balloon lands depends partly on the breeze, which is why a chase crew usually follows along the roads below.
People who have flown often say the strangest part is the quiet. Moving with the wind, a balloon barely feels the breeze at all, so between bursts from the burner the basket can be calm enough to hear dogs barking on the ground. Flights tend to happen early in the morning or near evening, when the air is steadier.
You do not need to leave the ground to enjoy them. Balloon gatherings in many parts of the country let visitors walk among the envelopes as they inflate, which is a sight in itself: a heap of nylon slowly swelling into something the size of a house.
The envelopes are usually made of tough nylon or polyester, and the baskets are often still woven from wicker, which is light and flexes a little on landing.
