A little reason to celebrate

National Trails Day

Nature · Hobby · The first Saturday in June

A day for trails of every kind, from city greenways to mountain footpaths, and the simple pleasure of walking, riding or paddling them.

National Trails Day

National Trails Day falls on Saturday, June 5, 2027. That is 221 days away.

A trail is a path someone decided was worth keeping. It might be packed dirt through a pine forest, a paved rail trail between two towns, or a faint line of trampled grass along a creek. National Trails Day, held on the first Saturday in June, gives all of them a turn in the spotlight.

Trails come in more varieties than people expect. Some are for hikers only. Others welcome bikes, horses or wheelchairs, and water trails are mapped routes for canoes and kayaks. Many old railroad lines have been turned into long, gentle paths, which is why some trails stay so flat for so many miles.

The usual way to mark the day is simply to go out on one. Families pick a short loop near home, groups of friends tackle something longer, and plenty of people walk a path they have driven past for years without trying. Some spend the morning helping out instead, clearing fallen branches or picking up litter with a local trail group.

Early June suits this well. Leaves are full, wildflowers are out in many places, and the hottest weeks have usually not arrived yet. Trailheads often have a small board with a map, and reading it before setting off saves a lot of guessing at forks.

Painted marks on trees, called blazes, keep walkers on course. A single blaze means keep going, and two stacked together usually signal a turn ahead.
