Jackie Robinson Day honors the baseball player who broke Major League Baseball's color barrier and wore the number 42 for the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Jackie Robinson Day falls on Thursday, April 15, 2027. That is 170 days away.
Jackie Robinson was the first Black player in modern Major League Baseball. He took the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers and ended a long period when the major leagues were closed to Black players. He wore the number 42, and that number is now the easiest way to spot this day.
On ballfields across the country, every player, coach and umpire in the major leagues wears 42. Box scores and broadcasts look a little strange when nobody can be told apart by number, and that sameness is the point. The number is also retired across all of Major League Baseball, so on any other day of the season no new player can choose it.
Robinson was more than a symbol. He was an aggressive, quick player who could hit for average, play several positions and unsettle pitchers on the base paths. He was known for stealing home, one of the boldest plays in the game. Before baseball he was a standout athlete in several sports at UCLA, and after his playing career he spoke and wrote about fairness in public life.
People mark the day by watching a game, reading about his career, or talking with kids about what it took to play under that kind of pressure. Many libraries carry biographies and his own memoir, and old game footage is easy to find. Watching him run the bases, even in grainy film, explains a lot about why pitchers worried whenever he reached first.
