Titanic Remembrance Day

History · Commemorative · April 15

Titanic Remembrance Day honors the passengers and crew of the RMS Titanic, the ocean liner that sank after striking an iceberg on its maiden voyage.

Titanic Remembrance Day falls on Thursday, April 15, 2027. That is 170 days away.

The Titanic was a British passenger liner that struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic during its first voyage and sank within hours. Many of the people aboard lost their lives. Titanic Remembrance Day is set aside to remember them, the passengers and the crew alike.

The ship carried a cross section of its world. Wealthy travelers had cabins on the upper decks, while families emigrating to start new lives traveled in third class far below. Stewards, stokers, cooks and engineers kept the ship running. There were not enough lifeboats for everyone on board, and the cold water left little chance for those who ended up in the sea.

People mark the day quietly. Some read survivor accounts or look through passenger lists, which often turn up a name from a hometown or a family line. Museums and libraries may display photographs, letters or recovered objects. Others spend a moment with the music associated with the ship, including the story of the band that kept playing as it went down.

The loss changed how ships were run. Rules about carrying enough lifeboats for all aboard and keeping radios staffed through the night followed from the disaster.

The wreck still rests on the floor of the North Atlantic, broken into two main pieces, slowly being worn away by the deep sea.
