Tax Day, also called Income Tax Pay Day, is the deadline for filing federal income tax returns in the United States.

Tax Day falls on Thursday, April 15, 2027. That is 170 days away.
Income tax returns are due. That is the plain heart of the day: the deadline for most people in the United States to file their federal income tax return and pay any tax they still owe.
The run-up has a familiar texture. Shoeboxes of receipts come down from closets. Kitchen tables disappear under forms, pay statements and envelopes. Some people finished weeks ago and feel quietly smug about it. Others spend the final evening with a calculator and a strong cup of coffee, and post offices have long been known for a late rush of people mailing returns at the last minute.
A tax return is a summary of a year in numbers. It lists what you earned, what was already withheld from your paychecks, and any credits or deductions that apply. The result is either a refund, a balance due, or, now and then, a neat zero. Many people now file electronically, which has made the mailbox dash less common than it once was.
People who need more time can usually request an extension to file, though that generally does not extend the time to pay. Plenty of households also use the day to tidy up: shredding old papers they no longer need, setting up a folder for next year, and making a note of where everything ended up.
The folder is the part most people promise to keep up, and it tends to start empty and stay that way until the shoebox comes back out.
