A little reason to celebrate

Pony Express Day

History ยท April 3

A look back at the Pony Express, the horseback mail relay that carried letters across the American West, and simple ways to remember its riders.

Pony Express Day

Pony Express Day falls on Saturday, April 3, 2027. That is 158 days away.

The Pony Express was a mail service that moved letters across the American West on horseback. Riders carried mail in a relay, handing it off at a chain of stations along a long route between Missouri and California.

The idea was speed through repetition. A rider would gallop to the next station, swap a tired horse for a fresh one, and keep going. After a stretch of riding, he passed the mail to the next rider, who did the same. Letters traveled in a leather cover called a mochila, which slipped over the saddle so it could move from horse to horse in moments.

The service did not last long. The transcontinental telegraph could send a message in far less time than any horse, and the Pony Express soon closed. Its short run is part of why it holds such a place in Western lore. It sits right at the point where letters carried by hand gave way to messages sent by wire.

People usually mark the day by reading about the route, visiting a museum or historic station if one is nearby, or tracing the trail on a map. Some areas along the old route keep markers and preserved station sites, and they make a pleasant destination for a drive.

The riders were known for traveling light. Every ounce mattered to a horse running hard, so letters were often written on thin paper to keep the mochila as slim as possible.
