A day for tweed, the rough, warm woolen cloth known for its flecked colors and long use in jackets, caps and country wear.

Tweed Day falls on Saturday, April 3, 2027. That is 158 days away.
Tweed is a woolen cloth with a rough, slightly hairy surface and a soft weight that feels made for cold weather. Look closely at a piece and you will usually find more than one color in it. Threads of brown, green, gray or rust blend together so the fabric reads as one shade from across the room and many shades up close.
The cloth is often woven in patterns like herringbone, which looks like rows of tiny arrows, or houndstooth, with its jagged little checks. Plain tweeds exist too, but even those tend to have a speckled look from the mix of dyed wool.
Tweed has a strong link to Scotland and to outdoor life, and it shows up most in sturdy clothes: sport coats, flat caps, waistcoats, skirts and heavy overcoats. Because wool holds warmth even when it gets a bit damp, tweed earned its place on hillsides long before it reached lecture halls.
Marking the day mostly means noticing tweed or wearing it. Many people already own a tweed piece that only comes out a few times a year. Thrift and vintage stores are full of old tweed jackets, often in good shape, because the cloth is tough and wears slowly.
If you take one out, brush it gently with a clothes brush rather than tossing it in the washer. Wool can shrink and felt with heat and agitation, and a tweed jacket that comes out of a hot wash may fit a child.
