A little reason to celebrate

Public Television Day

History ยท April 7

A day for public television in the United States: the noncommercial stations that air educational shows, documentaries, news and children's programs.

Public Television Day

Public Television Day falls on Wednesday, April 7, 2027. That is 162 days away.

Public television is the part of the dial that runs without ordinary commercial breaks. In the United States it is made up of local, noncommercial stations that share programming and also make their own, supported largely by viewers, grants and public funds.

The schedule has a recognizable texture. Children's shows in the morning, cooking and home repair on weekend afternoons, nature films that linger on a single heron for a full minute, and long documentaries about wars, bridges and painters in the evening. Many stations also carry local news, high school quiz competitions and footage of town events that no one else would think to film.

People mark the day mostly by watching. Some revisit a show they grew up with, others finally start the documentary series they keep meaning to get to. Stations often post archives and full episodes online, so it is easy to find older programs without waiting for a rerun.

The local side tends to be the most interesting part. Each station has its own history, its own regional programs and often a studio that once hosted pledge drives with volunteers answering phones on camera. A look at your nearest station's website usually turns up a few shows made just down the road.
