A little reason to celebrate

National Rescue Dog Day

Animal ยท May 20

A day for rescue dogs: the shelter and rescue dogs who find new homes, and the people who adopt, foster and care for them.

National Rescue Dog Day

National Rescue Dog Day falls on Thursday, May 20, 2027. That is 205 days away.

A rescue dog is a dog who came to a new home through a shelter or rescue group rather than a breeder or a pet shop. Some were strays, some were surrendered by owners who could no longer keep them, and some simply ended up without a place to live.

They come in every size and shape. Plenty are mixed breeds with ears that do not quite match, and some are purebreds who had a rough patch. Many arrive as adults, which means their personalities are already showing. You can often meet a calm older dog and know fairly well what living with her will be like.

The first weeks in a new home can be quiet ones. A rescue dog may need time to learn the sounds of the house, the route of the evening walk and the fact that dinner keeps showing up. Patience and a steady routine help a lot. Then one day the dog is asleep upside down on the couch, and the settling in is over.

People mark the day in practical ways. Adopters share the story of how their dog came home. Others visit a local shelter, sign up to walk dogs or foster for a few weeks, or drop off donated towels and blankets, which shelters often use for bedding.

Fostering matters more than it might seem. A dog in a foster home learns about everyday household life, and the foster family learns things about the dog that help match him with the right adopter later.
