A little reason to celebrate

National Selfie Day

Fun ยท June 21

A day about the selfie, the self-portrait taken at arm's length with a phone, and the small craft of taking a good one.

National Selfie Day

National Selfie Day falls on Monday, June 21, 2027. That is 237 days away.

A selfie is a photo you take of yourself, usually with a phone held at arm's length or propped on something nearby. It is the quickest kind of self-portrait, and most people with a camera phone have taken one, even if only to check for spinach in their teeth.

The front-facing camera made the habit easy. You see yourself on the screen as you frame the shot, so you can adjust the angle, the light and the expression before you tap. Group selfies squeeze several faces into one frame, and a selfie stick extends the reach for wider views.

Good selfies tend to come down to light. A window in daytime gives soft, even light on a face, while a bright bulb directly overhead casts shadows under the eyes. Holding the phone slightly above eye level is a common habit, and the timer lets you set the phone down and step back to include more of the scene.

People mark the day by taking one and sharing it, or by looking back through old ones. A camera roll full of selfies turns out to be a loose diary: haircuts, trips, friends who moved away, and backgrounds you forgot you once stood in front of.

Some of the best ones are the least planned, taken in a hurry with someone laughing just outside the frame.
