White Cane Safety Day recognizes the white cane, a tool that helps people who are blind or have low vision travel independently and safely.

White Cane Safety Day falls on Friday, October 15, 2027. That is 353 days away.
A white cane is a long, light cane, usually white with a red band near the tip. It is used by people who are blind or have low vision to find their way and to move through the world on their own terms.
The cane does two jobs at once. Swept in a low arc ahead of each step, it finds curbs, stairs, poles and uneven ground before the feet do. It also tells drivers and people nearby that its user may not see them, which is why its color matters as much as its length.
There are a few kinds. A long cane is built for detecting obstacles and is the one most people picture. A shorter, lighter identification cane mainly signals low vision to others, and a support cane helps with balance while still carrying the same white signal. Many canes fold into sections so they can be tucked away on a bus or under a table.
The day is marked with awareness in mind. Schools, libraries and community groups often share how the cane works and how sighted people can be good neighbors to those who use one. Drivers are reminded to stop for a pedestrian with a white cane. Pedestrians learn to step aside rather than grab an arm or the cane itself.
If you want to help someone who is using a cane, ask first and follow their lead. A spoken "Would you like a hand?" is easy to answer either way, and a hand that waits for an answer is the kind most people welcome.
