A little reason to celebrate

Black Friday

Seasonal ยท The Friday after the fourth Thursday in November

Black Friday is the busy shopping day that opens the American holiday season, known for early hours, long lines and deep store discounts.

Black Friday

Black Friday falls on Friday, November 27, 2026. That is 31 days away.

Black Friday is the big shopping day that opens the holiday season in the United States. Stores open early, sometimes very early, and advertise steep discounts on televisions, toys, clothing and nearly everything else with a price tag.

For many people the day has a ritual feel. Some plan routes through the mall the night before, circling ads like a coach drawing up plays. Others treat it as a reason to stay home, eat leftovers and watch the parking lots fill from a safe distance. Both camps have their traditions, and both tend to involve a thermos of coffee.

The crowds are part of the story. Doorbuster deals, limited quantities and lines that wrap around buildings have made the day famous, and plenty of shoppers go as much for the atmosphere as for the bargains. In recent years a lot of the action has also moved online, so the rush now happens on phones and laptops as well as in stores.

The day also marks a shift in the year. Holiday lights go up in shop windows, seasonal music starts playing in earnest, and gift lists move from vague ideas to actual plans.

Plenty of families skip the stores entirely and spend the day outdoors, visiting relatives or starting on decorations. The name has stuck either way, and so has the image of a parking lot full before sunrise.
