A little reason to celebrate

Turtle Adoption Day

Animal ยท November 27

Turtle Adoption Day is about giving a pet turtle a long-term home and learning what these slow, long-lived reptiles really need.

Turtle Adoption Day

Turtle Adoption Day falls on Friday, November 27, 2026. That is 31 days away.

A turtle in a pet store tank looks like an easy pet. It sits on a rock, it does not bark, and it fits in your hand. The truth is closer to adopting a quiet roommate who may outlive your furniture, your car and possibly your lease.

Turtles are reptiles, which means they rely on their surroundings to stay warm. A pet turtle usually needs a basking spot with a heat lamp, special lighting, and, for water species, a tank with a good filter. Many common pet turtles can live for decades with proper care, so adoption is a long promise rather than a weekend project.

Rescues and reptile groups often care for turtles that were given up when their owners realized how big or how long-lived they would become. Adopting one of these animals gives it a second chance, and the rescue can usually tell you exactly what that particular turtle eats and how it likes its setup.

If adopting is not right for you now, there are still ways to mark the day. Reading about the species in your region, visiting a nature center, or simply learning the difference between a turtle and a tortoise (tortoises live on land and have sturdy, column-like legs) all count.

Wild turtles are best left where they are. If you see one crossing a road, it is almost always heading somewhere specific, and it already knows the way.
