A little reason to celebrate
Family ยท The Friday after the fourth Thursday in November
A day for sitting down with someone you know, asking good questions, and listening to their stories, maybe recording them to keep.

National Day of Listening falls on Friday, November 27, 2026. That is 31 days away.
Most family stories live in one person's memory until someone asks. The National Day of Listening is about asking. You pick a person, often a grandparent, parent, aunt or old friend, and you listen to them tell their story while you mostly stay quiet.
The idea sounds simple, and it is, but it feels different from ordinary conversation. Usually we listen while planning what to say next. Here the job is only to follow. A question like "What was your first job?" can lead to a boss nobody has mentioned in years, a bus route that no longer exists, or a reason someone moved across the country.
Many people record these talks on a phone. A recording keeps the voice, the pauses and the laugh, which a written note cannot. It helps to sit somewhere quiet, put the phone flat on the table, and check that it is actually recording before the good part starts.
Open questions work better than yes or no ones. "Tell me about the house you grew up in" invites a story. Follow-ups like "What happened next?" or "What did that smell like?" often bring out the details people did not know they remembered.
The talk does not need to be long. Twenty minutes about one ordinary afternoon from decades back can end up being the recording a family plays most often.
