A little reason to celebrate
National Pins and Needles Day
Hobby ยท November 27
A day for sewing and needlework, from straight pins and pincushions to hand stitching, mending and embroidery, with a nod to a Broadway revue.
National Pins and Needles Day falls on Friday, November 27, 2026. That is 31 days away.
A row of straight pins holding two pieces of fabric in place is how a lot of sewing starts. This day is for that work: pinning, threading a needle, and turning cloth into something that fits or lasts a bit longer.
The name nods to Pins and Needles, a Broadway musical revue whose cast were garment workers.
The tools are simple. Pins keep layers lined up so a seam stays straight. A needle carries thread through the fabric, either by hand or in a sewing machine. A pincushion, often the familiar tomato shape, keeps everything from ending up in the carpet. Some sewers prefer a magnetic dish for the same reason.
Needlework covers a wide spread of crafts. There is plain mending, like reattaching a button or closing a split seam. There is embroidery, cross stitch and quilting, where the stitching itself is the decoration. Many people keep a small kit of thread, needles and a few pins in a drawer and reach for it only when something tears. Others spend whole evenings on a single quilt square.
A few habits make the work easier. Pins placed across the seam line, rather than along it, are simpler to pull out as you go. A needle threader helps with fine eyes. Thread pulled from the spool and cut at an angle slips through more readily than thread that has been snipped straight or bitten off.
The most useful stitch for most people is still the one that puts a fallen button back where it belongs.
Ways to celebrate
- Sew back on a button that has been missing for too long.
- Mend a small tear or loose hem by hand.
- Try a simple embroidery or cross stitch pattern on scrap fabric.
- Sort your pins and needles into a pincushion or tin.
- Look up the Broadway revue Pins and Needles and its songs.
