A little reason to celebrate

National Children's Craft Day

Hobby · Family · March 14

A day for kids and the grown-ups around them to make things by hand, from paper chains and clay animals to cardboard castles.

National Children's Craft Day

National Children's Craft Day falls on Sunday, March 14, 2027. That is 138 days away.

Children's crafts are the things kids make with their hands: paper snowflakes, macaroni necklaces, finger paintings, clay creatures with slightly too many legs. The materials are usually ordinary. Paper, glue, string, crayons and whatever is in the recycling bin.

Most of the appeal is in the making rather than the result. A child cutting a paper heart learns how scissors turn, how glue spreads, and how a fold changes a shape. Crafting asks for patience and planning, but it also leaves room for mess and surprise, which kids tend to like more than adults do.

Families mark the day at the kitchen table, often with newspaper spread underneath. Classrooms, libraries and community centers may set out supplies for a group project. Some of the best crafts come from limits. An empty cereal box becomes a robot, a sock becomes a puppet, and a paper plate becomes almost anything with a face.

It helps to let the child lead. Adults can offer materials and a little help with tricky steps, then step back. The finished piece may not look like the picture in the book, and that is usually where the personality shows.

The results tend to end up on the refrigerator, held up by a magnet, for a surprisingly long time.
