A day for putting your own life on paper, from one remembered afternoon to a whole memoir, in whatever form feels natural.

National Write Your Story Day falls on Sunday, March 14, 2027. That is 138 days away.
Everyone carries a story around, mostly in pieces. The kitchen you grew up in, the job you almost took, the friend who taught you to drive. Writing it down turns those pieces into something you can hold, reread and hand to someone else.
The story does not have to be long or complete. A single page about one ordinary morning counts. So does a list of every place you have lived, with one sentence about each. Many people find it easier to start with a specific object, like a coat or a recipe card, and follow wherever it leads.
Some write in a notebook, some type into a phone during a commute, and some talk into a recorder and transcribe later. Letters work well too. Addressing a story to one person, a grandchild or a younger version of yourself, tends to make the writing plainer and more honest.
The hardest part is usually the blank page, which has a way of looking much larger than it is. Setting a timer for ten minutes and writing without stopping gets past it more often than waiting for the right opening line. Spelling and order can be fixed later.
Old photographs are useful here. Pull one out, write down who is in it and what happened just outside the frame, and the details that nobody else remembers start to come back.
