A little reason to celebrate

National Learn About Butterflies Day

Animal · Nature · March 14

A day for learning about butterflies: how they grow from caterpillars, what they eat, and how to spot and help them in your own neighborhood.

National Learn About Butterflies Day

National Learn About Butterflies Day falls on Sunday, March 14, 2027. That is 138 days away.

Butterflies start life as something else entirely. A butterfly lays an egg, the egg hatches into a caterpillar, the caterpillar eats and grows, then forms a chrysalis and comes out with wings. That whole change, called complete metamorphosis, is the first thing most people learn about them, and it still sounds a little unlikely.

Up close, a butterfly wing is covered in tiny overlapping scales. They give the wing its color, which is why a butterfly that has been handled can look faded in spots. Adults drink nectar through a long, coiled mouthpart called a proboscis, which unrolls like a party horn when they land on a flower.

Many caterpillars are picky eaters. Monarch caterpillars feed on milkweed, and other species depend on their own particular host plants. A garden full of flowers helps the adults, but the right leaves are what let the next generation grow.

Learning about butterflies mostly means paying attention. Sunny, calm mornings are a good time to watch them, since they need warmth to fly. A field guide or a free identification app can turn "an orange one" into a name, and noting where and when you saw it makes the next sighting easier to recognize.

Some butterflies look alike at a glance, so it helps to check the pattern on the underside of the wings, which is often what they show when resting.
