Save a Spider Day falls on Sunday, March 14, 2027. That is 138 days away.
A spider in the bathtub tends to get one of two responses. This day argues for the gentler one: a cup, a piece of card, and a short walk to the back door.
Spiders are arachnids, not insects. They have eight legs, two main body parts, and no antennae. Most of them eat insects, which makes the quiet one in the corner of the garage a sort of unpaid pest service. Many spin silk webs to catch their food, while others, like jumping spiders and wolf spiders, hunt on foot and rely on sharp eyesight or speed.
Marking the day is mostly a matter of patience. People let the web on the porch light stay up a little longer, or they finally learn the cup-and-card method instead of reaching for a shoe. Others take a slow look at a web in the morning, when dew makes every thread easy to see, and notice how orderly the spiral really is.
There is plenty to watch once you start looking. Orb weavers often rebuild their webs regularly, and some eat the old silk to reuse it. A spider sitting perfectly still in the middle of its web is usually waiting, feeling for the vibration of something landing.
If you would rather not share a room with one, moving it outside is a fine compromise. A sheltered spot near shrubs or a woodpile gives it a better chance than open pavement.
