A little reason to celebrate

Debunking Day

Fun ยท March 11

Debunking Day is about checking common myths and popular beliefs against the evidence, and enjoying what turns out to be true instead.

Debunking Day

Debunking Day falls on Thursday, March 11, 2027. That is 135 days away.

Some things everyone knows turn out to be wrong. Debunking means taking one of those confident little beliefs and testing it against the evidence, then saying plainly what holds up and what does not.

The classics are easy to find. Goldfish do not have a memory of only a few seconds; they can be trained to respond to signals. Bulls are not enraged by the color red, since they react to the movement of the cape. Lightning can strike the same place more than once, and tall buildings are hit again and again. Each of these sounds right until someone looks closer.

Part of the pleasure is the moment of surprise. Another part is noticing how a myth spreads. Many of them are tidy, memorable and repeated by people who mean well, which is exactly why they last. A good debunk is usually gentle. It explains where the belief came from as well as why it falls short.

People mark the day by trading favorite myths with friends, looking up a fact they have repeated for years, or reading about a famous misconception. Teachers and families sometimes turn it into a quiz, with one person reading a claim aloud and everyone else voting true or false before the answer comes out.

The most useful habit it encourages is a simple question: how do we know that? Asked kindly, it works on old sayings, viral posts and things printed on cereal boxes alike.
