A little reason to celebrate

Popcorn Lover's Day

Food ยท The second Thursday in March

A day for people devoted to popcorn and their particular habits: the favorite bowl, the house topping, and the fight over the last handful.

Popcorn Lover's Day

Popcorn Lover's Day falls on Thursday, March 11, 2027. That is 135 days away.

Popcorn lovers tend to have rules. One bowl is the popcorn bowl, and nothing else goes in it. Someone in the house salts in layers, not all at the end. Someone else saves the half-popped pieces for last because they like the extra crunch.

That is the spirit of the second Thursday in March. It is less about popcorn as a snack and more about the people who have opinions on it. Ask three lovers how they eat it and you may get three answers: by the fistful, one piece at a time, or tipped straight from the bowl like a drink (frowned on, but common).

Toppings are where loyalty shows. Some stay with butter and salt for life. Others keep a shelf of shakers: grated parmesan, smoked paprika, cinnamon sugar, nutritional yeast, a little chili and lime. A tasting with small bowls side by side is an easy way to settle arguments, or start new ones.

Then there are the old maids, the kernels that never popped and wait at the bottom of the bowl. Lovers know to stop before they reach them. They are hard enough to be rough on teeth, so they are best tipped out rather than crunched.

Popcorn also travels well. It goes into paper bags for a movie at home, gets mixed with nuts and dried fruit for a walk, and fills a bowl passed around a table during a long board game. The bowl usually comes back empty, with a few old maids rattling around in it.
