A day for thinking about dreams, both the stories we see while asleep and the hopes we carry around while awake.

National Dream Day falls on Thursday, March 11, 2027. That is 135 days away.
Dreams come in two kinds, and this day makes room for both. There are the ones that arrive at night, with their shifting rooms and half-familiar faces, and the ones we keep during the day, the plans and wishes we turn over while waiting for the kettle.
Sleeping dreams are strange company. Most happen during the stage of sleep called REM, when the eyes move quickly under closed lids. They can feel vivid and urgent, then fade within minutes of waking. Anyone who has tried to describe one at breakfast knows how quickly the plot falls apart in daylight.
Waking dreams last longer. A trip someone has meant to take for years, a skill they keep promising to learn, a garden that exists so far only as a sketch. People mark the day by giving those ideas a little air: writing them down, saying them out loud to a friend, or taking one small first step.
A notebook by the bed helps with the nighttime kind. Jotting down a dream right after waking, before checking a phone, tends to catch details that would otherwise slip away. Read back a week later, those notes can be surprisingly funny, or surprisingly familiar.
Some people find that the two kinds overlap, that a recurring image at night points toward something they want in the day. Others just enjoy the odd scenery. Either way, the notebook usually ends up with a flying dog in it somewhere.
