National Fire Pup Day honors firehouse dogs, especially the Dalmatian, and the long bond between dogs and firefighters.

National Fire Pup Day falls on Friday, October 1, 2027. That is 339 days away.
Picture a red engine parked in an open bay, and next to it a white dog with black spots watching the street. That is the fire pup, the firehouse dog, and this day gives it some attention.
The Dalmatian is the breed most people link with fire stations. Back when engines were pulled by horses, these dogs ran alongside the teams. They cleared the way, kept the horses calm and guarded the wagon while firefighters worked. Horses gave way to motors long ago, but the spotted dog stayed on as a mascot and a companion.
Dalmatians are energetic, athletic dogs bred for stamina. They need plenty of exercise and company. Their puppies are born almost entirely white, and the spots fill in over the first weeks of life.
Not every firehouse dog is a Dalmatian, of course. Some stations keep mixed breeds, and some dogs work as trained arson detection dogs, using their noses to help investigators find traces of accelerants after a fire.
People mark the day by visiting a station dog, sharing photos of their own spotted pets, or reading up on the history of working dogs. Many local fire departments hold open houses during the year, and a resident dog is often the most photographed member of the crew.
A good fire pup, like a good firefighter, tends to be calm around noise and quick to settle once the trucks come home.
