A little reason to celebrate

Model T Day

History ยท October 1

A look at the Ford Model T, the plain, sturdy car that put many American families on the road, and simple ways to appreciate it today.

Model T Day

Model T Day falls on Friday, October 1, 2027. That is 339 days away.

The Model T was a car built by the Ford Motor Company, and it became one of the first automobiles that ordinary American households could realistically own. It was simple, tall and boxy, made to handle rough country roads at a time when paved highways were rare.

Driving one was nothing like driving a modern car. It used pedals and a hand lever to change speed, and early versions were started with a hand crank at the front. Owners often did their own repairs, and the car's plain design made that possible. Many were adapted for farm work, deliveries and hauling.

Part of its story is how it was made. Ford used a moving assembly line to build the Model T, which cut the time and cost of making each car. That method spread to other industries and changed how factories worked.

Today the Model T lives on in museums, parades and the garages of collectors who keep them running. Car clubs devoted to the model still meet, and some owners will happily explain the pedals to anyone patient enough to listen. Seeing one move under its own power is a good way to understand how different early driving felt.

If you have older relatives, ask what their parents or grandparents drove. Family stories about first cars tend to be specific and memorable, down to the color of the paint.
