A day for coffee, the brewed drink people across the world share, marked in the United States too with a cup and some attention to where it comes from.

International Coffee Day falls on Friday, October 1, 2027. That is 339 days away.
Coffee is one of the few drinks that nearly every culture has made its own. Some brew it strong and small, some long and milky, some sweet and spiced, and all of it begins with roasted beans and hot water. International Coffee Day is marked in the United States too, as a reason to look a little closer at the cup.
The beans grow on coffee plants in warm, tropical regions, often far from where the coffee is finally poured. Two kinds dominate: arabica, prized for its softer and more aromatic flavor, and robusta, which is stronger, more bitter and higher in caffeine. Roasting changes them most of all. Light roasts keep bright, fruity notes, while dark roasts taste deeper and smokier.
Most people mark the day simply, by paying attention to a drink they usually gulp. A local cafe might be worth a visit for a pour over or an espresso. At home, a change of method (a French press instead of a drip machine, or a slow cold brew made in the refrigerator) can make familiar beans taste new.
Freshness matters more than gear. Whole beans ground just before brewing hold their aroma far better than ground coffee left open for weeks, and an airtight container away from heat and light keeps them at their best.
A second cup, shared with someone, tends to taste better than the first one alone.
