National Raccoon Day falls on Friday, October 1, 2027. That is 339 days away.
Raccoons are medium-sized mammals native to North America, easy to spot by the dark mask across their eyes and the ringed bands on their bushy tails. They live in woods and marshes, along streams, and in plenty of towns and cities.
Appreciation is the right word here. Raccoons are adaptable in a way few animals manage. They eat almost anything, from fruit and nuts to insects, frogs and crayfish, and they are mostly active at night. Their front paws are remarkably sensitive, and they often feel around for food in shallow water, which is part of why people have long thought of them as washing their meals.
That cleverness has a downside for neighbors. Raccoons are good at opening things, including trash cans and pet food bins left outside. The kindest thing a person can do for them is make human food hard to reach, so the animals stay wild and keep their natural habits. Raccoons can also carry diseases, so they are best watched from a distance and never handled or fed.
Most people meet raccoons as a pair of shining eyes at the edge of a flashlight beam, or as small handlike tracks pressed into mud by a creek. Those tracks, with five long toes on each foot, are among the easiest to recognize in the woods.
