National DNA Day falls on Sunday, April 25, 2027. That is 180 days away.
DNA is the long, twisted molecule that holds the instructions for building and running a living thing. Most living cells carry those instructions inside them, from the cells of an oak leaf to the ones in your own skin.
The structure is famously tidy. DNA is made of two strands wound around each other in a shape called a double helix, often pictured as a ladder with a slow twist. The rungs are built from four chemical bases, known by their initials A, T, C and G. A pairs with T, and C pairs with G, so each strand can serve as a template for the other. That pairing is how a cell copies its DNA before it divides.
The order of those bases is the message. Stretches of DNA called genes tell a cell how to make proteins, which do much of the work of keeping an organism alive. Children inherit DNA from their parents, which is why family resemblances show up in noses, freckles and the shape of a laugh.
People mark the day in curious, hands-on ways. Classrooms build helix models out of candy and toothpicks. Some folks read up on how heredity works, or trace why a trait like eye color runs in their family. Kitchen science fans pull visible strands of DNA from mashed strawberries using dish soap, salt and cold rubbing alcohol, which turns an abstract idea into a white, stringy clump you can lift with a stick.
Strawberries work well for that experiment because their cells hold several copies of each set of chromosomes, so there is plenty of DNA to see.
