National Telephone Day falls on Sunday, April 25, 2027. That is 180 days away.
The telephone carries a voice over distance. Early phones turned the sound of speech into an electrical signal sent along a wire, and a receiver at the other end turned it back into sound.
For a long stretch, a phone was furniture. It hung on the kitchen wall or sat on a hall table, tethered by a coiled cord that somehow always got tangled. Rotary dials made you wait for each number to click back into place, which gave dialing a certain patience. Push buttons sped things up, cordless handsets let people wander the house mid-conversation, and mobile phones finally untied the whole idea from the wall.
The call itself has changed less than the hardware. Someone still says hello, someone still answers, and there is still that pause when two people start talking at once.
People mark the day by actually using a phone for its original purpose. That might mean calling a grandparent instead of texting, digging an old handset out of a closet, or explaining a rotary dial to someone who has only ever tapped a screen. Antique shops and some museums keep old models on display, and the heavy feel of a vintage receiver surprises most people who pick one up.
A landline phone often kept working during a power outage, because the line carried its own small current from the phone company.
