World Penguin Day falls on Sunday, April 25, 2027. That is 180 days away.
A parent penguin coming back from the sea to a colony of thousands has one job: find its own chick. It does this by ear. Penguin parents and chicks learn each other's calls, and in all that noise a familiar voice is how a family finds itself again.
World Penguin Day is marked in the United States too, by zoos, classrooms and plenty of people who simply like these birds. It is a chance to look at penguins less as a single cartoon shape and more as a family with real range.
The size gap alone is striking. The emperor penguin is the largest living species, and its males keep the egg balanced on their feet under a warm fold of skin through the cold months. At the other end sits the little penguin, found along the coasts of southern Australia and New Zealand. It nests in burrows and tends to come ashore around dusk, which makes a nightly parade of very short commuters.
Colony life sets the rhythm for many species. Nests sit close together, neighbors squabble over space, and the sound rarely lets up. Once chicks are old enough, some species gather them into groups, called creches, while the adults head out to feed. The chicks huddle together and wait for one particular voice to call them home.
